Description

Purgatory is the 8th mainline stage in The True Backrooms: Renovated.

SPRINTING FLASHLIGHT (3)

This stage greets the player with a mildew odor. It is dimly lit with cage-lights. Smooth, brown bricks make up mostly every surface of Purgatory; floors, walls, ceiling and all. The floor is a darker gray brick color. Walls with circular holes and arches segment the place into separate areas. Pipes line the ceilings, stretching across the full length of rooms.

After the first two rooms and heading left, a carpeted storage area can be located, featuring some shelves, boxes, and golden chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. The player can switch the lever here to open the first shutter gate and access the puzzles. Two notes can also be found lying on the table.

Opening the shutter gate and stepping past the threshold, the player is now in The Inspector's territory. Don't worry, as it does not actively seek out the player, and remains neutral normally.

Puzzles

Messing up on any puzzles will turn the orange lights red and cause The Inspector to come after you. You cannot escape it, and you are forced to get jumpscared if you mess up. Completing all three puzzles results in the gate opening automatically.

Timing Puzzle

The first puzzle is to the left, requiring the player to press the button when the spinner is in the red area. You must do this three times to complete this puzzle. Each timing puzzle, from left to right, gets progressively faster compared to the previous one.

Lights Puzzle

The second puzzle is to the right, requiring the player to flip the switches in the box according to the red and green lights shown on the left. If a light is green, you flip the switch up. If it is red, leave it. The pattern will be randomized every time.

Buttons Puzzle

The third and last puzzle is in the top left and top right corners. You must press one of the buttons then quickly run to the other button before the time runs out. The ticking will slowly increase until time is up. This puzzle can be done solo, or with the help of multiple players.

Graffiti

In the main large room with the puzzles, a graffiti can be found. It is to the right of the lights puzzle, on the ground next to a pilar. Using the flashlight's long beam will cause The Player to collect it, where it will dissipate and fade away into black particles.

Entrances

You can join this stage through the Stage Select menu if you've previously discovered it, or if you bought it through the Unlock All Stages gamepass.

Natura

Progress through the hallways until you reach the final room. You may walk in the water and cut the corner in order to reach the exit faster. Walk towards the door to be teleported to Purgatory.

LINK_ROT

Click to move forward 19 times. The last few clicks will phase you under the ground into a void room filled with eyes. Come into close contact with The Operator to be teleported to Purgatory.

Exits

Delay

Complete all three puzzles: the timing puzzle, lights puzzle, and buttons puzzle. Once finished, the exit shutter gate will open. Head through the hallway and open the door, then walk down the stairs to be teleported to Delay.

The Inspector

Main article: The Inspector

The Inspector is an entity who does not seek to harm you. Normally, it will not harm you unless you touch it. If you happen to fail a puzzle however, they will beeline towards you faster then your running speed, inescapably increasing your paranoia. Failing a puzzle includes:

  • Pressing the button in the timing puzzle when the spinner is not in the red area
  • Pressing the green START button in lights puzzle when the patterns do not match
  • Failing to press both buttons in time in the buttons puzzle

Trivia

  • It is possible to get The Inspector past the first shutter gate by messing up a puzzle, then resetting. The Inspector will chase you into the area before the first gate and is able to slip under it. Once it jumpscares you, it will remain stuck until you repeat this process again on the other side.
  • The cagelights are the same ones seen in Classic Stage 3.
  • Purgatory is not inspired by The Poolrooms, but rather by a metro station.
